  • Application Scheme of WLAN+RFID Combination System


This paper studies a combination system called WLAN+RFID (hereinafter referred to as a combined system) consisting of WLAN and RFID. It is based on wireless local area network and radio frequency identification technology. It utilizes the wireless transmission of WLAN and the non-contact automatic identification of RFID to provide users with faster and more flexible identification services.
In the outdoor open-air large cargo yards at port terminals, stations or logistics centers, due to the large number of sites and the variety of materials, traditional manual operations consume a lot of manpower and time, and are prone to errors. When the staff inspect, store, register, select, locate and transport the goods, they and the position of the forklift need to be moved. Install multiple APs on the roof of the yard building or at the relevant location so that the WLAN's wireless signal covers the entire yard. The Android RFID handheld reader can be roamed within the coverage area and connected to the inventory system of the yard via WLAN, thereby solving the operator's mobility problems.
At the time of receipt, the staff carried the handheld terminal close to the cargo. Within the reading range, the tag data can be displayed on the LCD screen of the handset and entered the central database via WLAN. Staff can also enter other relevant data on the handheld's small keyboard, which also enters the central database via WLAN. Next, the system feeds back the location and related data of the goods back to the handset and displays them on the screen.

When the production is completed to the delivery process, each carton passes through an RFID tag reader, and all carton information is read and transmitted to the computer.

One of the main advantages of RFID technology for manufacturers is that they can be integrated directly into existing products, machines or equipment without major changes to current production equipment. The RFID tag itself has read and write capabilities, can be written to the manufacturer's unique encrypted code, and easily integrated into a variety of goods.

  • The Impact of Metals on RFID Systems


At present, radio frequency identification is most widely used in high frequency and ultra high frequency. However, radio frequency in the UHF band is sensitive to the environment, especially metal, which makes the passive tag of this working frequency unable to work on objects with metal surfaces, and the most widely used logistics industry for radio frequency identification is metal environment. Therefore, the shortcoming of metal sensitivity greatly limits its application in the logistics industry.
When RFID systems are used in metal environments, the impact of metals on UHF RFID readers is mainly reflected in two aspects: reflectivity and shielding. A metal plate is placed directly in front of the reader antenna. The distance between the metal plate and the fixed RFID reader at 2.5 m. The reader works in the UHF band and conforms to the ISO18000--6 standard.
When the metal is close to the reader antenna, due to electromagnetic induction, the RF energy is absorbed into its own electric field energy, thus reducing the total energy of the original RF field strength, and also generating an induced magnetic field, which is perpendicular to the metal surface. The distribution of the RF field strength is deformed on the metal surface, and the magnetic curve tends to be gentle. Therefore, when the label is attached to the metal surface or very close to the metal surface, there is actually no RF field strength distribution in the space, and the tag antenna cannot cut the magnetic field line to obtain the electromagnetic field energy, and the label cannot work normally.

  • Application of RFID Systems and Tags on Production Lines


Many vendors label their labels before shipping in order to comply with the new RFID regulations, but Wells' approach is different. It used RFID systems early in the manufacturing process, saving costs and achieving other advantages. Bras Galles, Wells’ process control manager, began a pilot project with dairy company automation supplier Rockwell AutomaTIon in mid-2004.
The RFID antenna reader is written on the RFID tag, which is attached to the outer package of the two-barrel product and can be attached to 30 outer boxes per minute. When the quick freezing is performed, the label on the outer box is read again, and the speed is up to four times that of the previous one, and finally the product is shipped. The RFID system passes the information back to the Wells' control system to enable information sharing in the company's corporate network. Galles explained that if the system is shipped with the usual label and then shipped, Wells’ must introduce manual repackaging, which increases labor costs.
The dairy company and Rockwell achieved efficiency gains through RFID systems, leveraging the data processing capabilities of the tags. For example, each RFID product of a dairy company is connected to a database with production parameters for the ice cream in the package, including production time, batch identification information, and product lines. This allows the Wells’ operator to accurately understand when each label is pasted and which batch of shipments belong to the batch.
